In their final moments before journeying to Mars, astronaut Mark Watney recorded an intimate tour of the Hermes spaceship and downlinked the video to Earth for broadcast. The tour includes an introduction to each member of the ARES 3 crew and a farewell message from Mark.
The short was inspired by the playfulness of early Apollo-era documentary videos and Chris Hadfield's recordings from I.S.S. To add an extra layer of authenticity, we designed and animated a Periscope-like social media feed, complete with messages for the crew, trending topics, and individual crew facts.
The Prologue Campaign:
To launch The Martian, we worked closely with legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott to design a months-long original narrative that told the story of the mission from the public's point of view. Our goal was simple: Bring the world to life with the same cultural noise of the Cold War-era space race. The campaign included a series of scripted in-world prologue videos that introduced the crew, the mission, and the global response.
